Chapter Ten

At this point I feel like I need to be clear about something, the dress was bought in advance. I mean that makes sense, right? Summer Valley wasn't exactly a hot spot for haute couture and I needed to plan out a wardrobe around it and its a dress, it's a big thing to pack and I only had one event to go to so I only brought one dress and so I didn't have any other options to go with.

What I'm trying to say is that I didn't pick out a dress to make Patty jealous.

Besides subtlety has never exactly been my forte and if I was going to pick out a dress to make her jealous frankly I would have gone with something slinky and sexy. Something that emphasized the assets that men tend to love and women seem to envy. Something that would have turned heads in a different way.

If my intention here was to make Carter want me and make Patty hate me a little bit more, well then frankly I would have gone with something that made me look a little less like a princess. And if I was being paranoid… well that was a road I didn't want to head down.

This compliment, it was the first nice thing he'd said and it wasn't close to the warmth we'd shown each other in the aftermath of our encounter in the abandoned building, but it gave me the littlest bit of hope that such warmth wasn't now forever out of reach.

That said it was perfectly reasonable and understandable for him to compliment my dress because frankly this dress was absolutely fucking stunning if I do say so myself.

Cast somewhere between a pale grey and a pale blue, the skirt of it was made up of what felt like layers of transparent and nearly sheer fabric that, placed one on top of another, only let through the slightest hint of what was hidden beneath it. Demurely it ran all the way down to my ankles and when I walked it swept and floated around me, giving any observer the sense that I was almost ethereal and indistinct.

The bodice was also made of a transparent fabric, but this time only a single layer. The sheer nature of
